Wahgoshig First Nation
First Nation, formerly known as Abitibi-Ontario Band of Abitibi, is an Anishinaabe (Algonquin and Ojibwa) and Cree First Nation band situated near Matheson in the Cochrane District of northeastern Ontario, Canada. The band occupies the 7,770.1-hectare Abitibi Indian Reserve No. 70, located at the southern end of Lake Abitibi. This reserve was established following the signing of the James Bay Treaty (Treaty 9) at the Hudson's Bay Company post on Lake Abitibi in Quebec on June 7, 1906.
As of May 2021, the Nation has a total of 380 registered members, including 145 who reside on the reserve. The community continues to honor its rich cultural heritage and maintain its ancestral lands while fostering growth and development for future generations.
