Serpent River Band Office
Serpent River First Nation boasts a rich history that traces back to our migration from the East Coast around 900 AD, evolving into our current identity as Genabaajing in the 21st century. We are part of the Three Fires Confederacy, where each nation plays a vital role: the Potawatomi serve as the Keepers of the Sacred Fire, the Odawa are the providers in hunting and trade, and we, the Ojibwe, are tasked with military protection and the preservation of sacred teachings.
Throughout our history, the Woodland Culture emerged, facilitating the establishment of extensive trade routes across North America. This period also saw the development of our Clan System to govern our people, the formation of a nomadic lifestyle that allowed us to traverse North and South with the changing seasons, and the clear delineation of roles for hunters and gatherers within our society. Our enduring legacy is a testament to our resilience and commitment to preserving our cultural heritage.
