Wabun Tribal Council

Wabun Tribal Council is a non-profit, community-driven organization dedicated to providing high-quality, culturally appropriate services for its member First Nations. Headquartered at Mattagami First Nation and operationally based in Timmins, Wabun operates under the guidance of its Board of Directors, which is composed of the Chiefs from each of its member nations. The organization's Executive Director oversees day-to-day operations.

Established in 1989 and beginning operations in 1990, Wabun was formed to support the devolution policy of the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC), which transferred service delivery to First Nations at the local level. The council facilitates a wide range of services in health, education, governance, economic development, and resource management.

The name "Wabun," meaning "sunrise" in Ojibwe, symbolizes a new beginning and reflects the council's goal of promoting self-reliance and enhancing the cultures, languages, and development needs of its members.

Wabun is incorporated under the Ontario Business Corporation Act as a non-profit organization and works with various funding bodies, including INAC, HRDC, and Health Canada, to deliver its programs.
