JARDINES DE SAN JUAN

Alicia and Manuel Santana opened Jardines de San Juan in 1977, more than 40 years ago. Although they are no longer with us and are greatly missed, their legacy lives on through this cherished restaurant, which remains a family-owned establishment.

Renowned throughout Santa Cruz County, Manny and Alice were known for hosting dinner parties that celebrated intellectual diversity. Their gatherings attracted an impressive lineup of guests, including science fiction writer Ray Bradbury, former Black Panther Huey Newton, avant-garde composer Lou Harrison, and historian Page Smith. A memorable moment came when Leon Panetta, a Republican-turned-Democrat who would later serve as White House chief of staff under President Clinton, announced his first run for Congress at the Santanas' home in Aptos s Day Valley.

At these vibrant events, Manny took pride in cooking generous portions of food, enjoying the thrill of bringing together dynamic personalities and creative minds who may not have otherwise met. The spirit of those gatherings continues to influence the atmosphere of Jardines de San Juan today, honoring the rich legacy of the Santana family.
